here we have Kirk Hammett in Jersey, Nba Jam in san antonio, Andy w/ Fish in San Diego, Hoth in Wyoming, and the Fucking Bates Motel in Colorado Springs.
so, ive explored the twitter. im into it, but come on. If you go to the little thing that says "suggested twitterers" or whatever they call them, if you scroll all the way down, it has one for Counting Crows. and the description says "adam's updates from the road". Now, I realize how fucked it is for me to make fun of this, seeing as how that's EXACTLY what i'm doing, but come on!! Do we really need to know about this guy's fucking mani/pedis? How interesting could this dudes life really be? I don't wanna read about the fucking Counting Crows, i dont wanna read about the Gin Blossoms, or toad the wet sproket or Cracker, or Fuel, or the Spin Doctors or hooty blowfish, or even Collective Soul... I dont give a shit how insightful they may be, i dont need to know what they had for lunch, i dont wanna know about a reunion, and i definitely don't EVER wanna hear MR JONES again. There is SO much terrible music that has ALMOST left our memories, can we PLEASE let it go. PLEASE. Dear Record Industry, Do you wanna know why no one sells records anymore? Because you sign and push SHIT. You pay radio stations to PLAY shit, and everyone KNOWS they all SUCK SHIT, so they stopped buying records, and started stealing the goods off the net so they could save bread there AND on gas. its win/win for the consumer, and its YOUR fault. Im sorry, but I will not be "following" "adam's" updates from the road. I will however be updating how pissed i get about these further issues on my own twitter account. keep em comin gleep-glop.
Election is one of the creepiest movies ever. And why pray tell, am i watching shitty edited versions of movies that ive seen a million times on tbs and tnt? well, its because we are fucking snowed in in Rawlins, Wyoming. Its been snowing on us for days. All thru Utah, Washington, Oregon, and I assume we'll get more of the same in Colorado. BUT... don't get me wrong... i love the snow. I just don't understand how the fuck I don't have any phone service right now. Billions of dollars spent on satellites and hundreds spent a month on these bills, and some flurries stir up, and now i can't watch HBO? We only get a few days off ya know. We are in the flat lands! There's like 15-20 phone towers in eyeshot. Anyway, i'm really not that concerned. Plus its kind of funny watching scenes from KILL BILL and hearing the dude say, "my name's buck and i like to.... party???" and its not even synced up. They even changed Pussy Wagon to Party Wagon. even on the fucking keys! ok... topic 2: Best thing on television? Forget that i always say LOST. The real entertainment is in infomercials. Sham-wow, Slap Chop, bowflex, Pro-activ, hairplugs for men, the one with the guy who wants you to clean your colon out (who looks like a greasy john waters), the one with the background that looks like larry king live, so that they can trick old people into watching it and thinking its news. All the different ones about losing weight, or making your weiner longer. the fucking testimonials are hilarious. shit, i don't even know what i'm talking about. im still laughing about that spongebob burger king commercial. I like square butts. what can i say?
holy shit man, we have been going so hard for the last few days. Hahaha. Once again back on the roller coaster. How to recap all the things going on in my gordon? Ill start off by recanting a bit of the Golden Gods Revolver Awards in LA. Got to see a bunch of dudes, hang with a ton of dudes, meet a ton of dudes, and imbibe a good amount of spirits. Megadeth ripped 3 jams at the end, Peace Sells, Sweating Bullets, and Holy Wars!! Fucking killed it. Ol Pete Macy from Early Man hung with us all week. Bummers that they had to bail on the tour, but i hope Mike feels better and his arm and back heal up well. Pete had a cutey lil friend who looked like Parker Posey with him. She said, "I hope they play Holy Wars", and ill be damned if they didnt rip right into it. Color me impressed. Not sure if ive ever even had a girlfriend who wouldve been able to name a Megadeth song, much less magically make them play songs at the whisper from her lips.
Hung w/ Lemmy for a bit, met Dave Lombardo (who was stoked on VT- made me blush), and basically had a few other lil bits of funniness go down that i'm not really at liberty to discuss here on the world wide web. But, don't feel left out, Video of the night coming soon. Should be worth the watch.
ok, moving on, we just jammed a few nights with Turbonegro and Kandi Coded. Super awesome to hang w/ Jaime and Johnny and Jack again. And good to see Knut back out, and Happy Tom and the whole crew. The shows went off. Thanx Portland and Seattle.
All day today we drove in and out of the snow... thru the mountains. It was amazing. Passed by the 45th Parallel. That's halfway betwixt the equator and the north pole! And it was snowing and sunny @ the same time! I felt like i was in the fucking twilight zone. Then later on tonight, after we got a hotel in Baker City, Oregon... I was hanging out here, walking across the parking lots to get to some food, and the wind was just blowing SO hard, and SOO cold across the plains, and I was thinking to myself, what the fuck would it have been like to be a cowboy out in the plains. I mean, granted, this is a bit high up for them, but I mean, the Oregon Trail went thru here, so.... Someone experienced this shit way back when. I was just thinking how it would be if we had no motel/hotel or whatever to stop at. Because there isn't shit out here really. Its one of those, get the fuck outta town kinda towns. 18 or life, know what i'm sayin? But, actually, itd be a lot worse if it was like 1820. I mean, you'd have to build a fire to stay alive. Every day, youd have to work on that goddamn fire. Or build another, or if you were being chased by the law or outlaws, or natives, or a posse... you'd have to hide and try not to be spotted while not freezing to death. I mean its bone chilling/stop you in your tracks cold. And there is nothing and i mean NOTHING for miles upon miles upon miles. Trying to think about how much you'd be able to take before you just gave up. If you haven't read it, you should all pass around a copy of Blood Meridian by cormac mccarthy. its a fucking wonderful book. Anyway. Its really overwhelming if you stop and think and freeze out there for a few minutes. It makes me know that even though i feel like im try to be prepared for anything, I must remember that anything means ANYTHING. shit can and will get crazy. shit IS crazy. Some of these places are disappear forever scary.
last but not least... here's a band ol guarden thorr sent me a link to... Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs. Badass ol Aussies. Give this thing a good long listen when you have time.
alahoyus to yall,
valient
oh yeah, ps: How awesome is that new burger king commercial w/ Spongebob and Sir Mixalot??? I like square butts!! "Booty is Booty."
Lots of driving. I would put a bunch of o's in the the word "lots" to emphasize how many lots, but then it looks like loots instead of lots. But, suffice to say, we've been driving a shitload. Actually easier to keep up with the shenanigans first hand on twitter. i'm @ valientthorr on there. What else? Bad food, crummy hotels. GRRRREAT shows! Couple rad gigs coming up with TURBONEGRO!!! portland and seattle get ready! I just watched all 6 episodes of "Eastbound & Down". So unbelievable. my favorite quote- "i know everything there is to know about relationships- just ask my 2nd wife Tina- and if Montel Williams wants to talk anymore shit, he can suck my dick, because those charges have been dropped..." Only North Carolina could bring you a character like Kenny Powers.
Dwight Yoakum was asking for it. So, first of all, yesterday we did Apocalypse Now Redux when waking up, and now it was Slingblade. Somehow watching other people having a harder time than I'm having has been comforting... for the last couple of days anyway. Not much else to report. Gearing up for a very exciting tour with Early Man starting next week. Ol' Pete Macy has "done come to hang" with us down in Costa Mesa. More partying until Thursday. If you're in the Southern California area, Detroit Bar on Thursday, Be there or be parallelogram. Here's one more beautiful pic of some of my buddies' daughters.
great things. BBQ today. Bacon, Egg and Cheese on a Cheezy Onion Bagel this morning. Woke up late and watched Apocalypse Now Redux. What a heavy flick.
Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper supporting roles are both unbelievable. Ok, so then after all the bbq, i went over and watched the new Punisher. Holy Shit.... There are some amazing fucked up brutal killings, but juxtapose that with some terrible terrible terrible dialogue, courtesy of none other than "McNutty" himself from The Wire. (I know its McNulty, but I prefer Bub's pronunciation.) Anyway, def worth the watch if you love seeing mobsters shot point blank in the face. Def better than the Dolph Lundgren shagrin from the late 80s (?). Other than that, I can't comment on the Thomas Jane one from a few years back, b/c it looked like such a piece of shit, I couldnt even get excited about it. Ok, enough about fucking Frank Castle. We have to deal with enough of him on a daily basis (if you're hip to be square) wink wink nudge nudge. I hung with lots of doggies and kitties today, and fucking partyied up on the rope swing. The dudes were shredding the pool, so Ill put up a ton of pics tomorrow. Word Berd.
things started out SOO promising. Sorry for the lack of updates.... i guess its a case of the old story where the poet or artist becomes so wrapped up in life that he has no time to reflect and reinterpret it anymore. Bummer. haha. What was it that Jim Croce said? "You never have the time to do things you love to do once you find them..." I'm paraphrasing. Anyway, the southwest was just as radical as the southeast and mideast. Best shows we've ever had in San Diego and Phoenix... and Long Beach and Los Angeles were nothing to sneeze at either... Ill tell ya about the bands we've been jamming with tomorrow. Thanx to all the thorriors for making those shows happenin'. Dudes bringing 8 other dudes will do that to a party. "you know what im talking about?" What else? Well, here's a riddle... every right piece of my puzzle just won't fit. I'm starting to think someone mixed up the fucking boxes. Just went to a baby shower today. Ate an amazing amount of cheeses, crackers, pretzel sticks w/ white chocolate drizzled on them, pizza, sandwiches, capri suns, and these hard bread stick things w/ some artichoke dip on them... INSANE! maybe that's over doing it. "insane..." Better? THEN, after hanging here at the skate house for a few hours playing on the rope swing, I checked out Adventureland, and had some Old Spaghetti Warehouse down in newport. Fullfilling day, even if i'm only speaking about my belly. Ok, more stuff soon, I have to go, b/c it's chilly outside where i'm having to stand in order to properly steal some wifi from the neighbors. Cheeers.
been watchin a ton of flicks here. Just watched Death Wish this morning. I love Charles Bronson. Yesterday we watched Howard the Duck. It was just released on dvd a few weeks back. Hasn't been available in years. And i know why. George Lucas knows a turd when he smells it. It was ok as far as bad movies go... and I DO love BAD movies... but this one was a real stinker. A few things saved it... and Not Jeffrey Jones like youre all thinking... And I'm sure Tim Robbins still has nightmares about his performance. Im talking LEA THOMPSON. What happened to her? Wheeeew. It also had some girl duck tits... we were trying to figure out who this movie was marketed to?? Couldn't've been kids... but?! The 70s and 80s were different. A "shit" here, a titty shot there... Jason pointed out Bad News Bears as an example... swearing and blatant racism in a kids movie. Oh well. Save your 11 bucks and netflixx it. Tim and Eric Season 2. GO PURCHASE. worth every nickel. "ill bet her taco smells like a dumpster... KABOWSH!" The dudes watched the 1st harry potter, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. Just not interested in that little bastard. ok, what else, well, I'm reading "The Most Beautiful Woman in Town" by Bukowski. Heavy and amazing. More on that soon.
Also been thinking about a new tattoo. Had an hourglass in my mind for a long while. We shall see. Here's a little mock up my friend Antone did...
yosoholius. So sxsw is over, and we are still reeling from it. Having to take a week off here in Houston so everyone can attend to some personal stuff. Trying to remember all the shit that we got into. Here's what i can remember on first thought:
Wednesday: Roll into town... Rock @ Emo's Annex. This was probably our best show of the week. We got the chance to party with different buddies all week long and it started just as we got here. (Jucifer, Priestess, the Bronx.) Saw Jucifer play, then we rocked, then we loaded our shit, and then we watched Priestess play. I have to say their new songs are badass. Especially "lady killer". Then we watched the Bronx kill it over @ Red 7. The next day is such a blur of blown eardrums and sore feet, that ill spare you the details of everything and just give you a list of the complete shows that i saw.
Friday: I can't even really remember a lot of what was going on this morning, but i do know that I made my way over to see Earthless play w/ J Mascis on extra guitar. This (unbeknownst to me at the time) was blowing out my fucking eardrums. They jammed so goddamned hard, and my ears were ringing for over an hour later. Best thing I saw really. Hmmm... Then sometime later we played @ a gay bar. It was rad, but totally unorganized. Then we partied it up some more w/ skeletonwitch and all the dude bands over at red 7.
Saturday: We played a party early style w/ like a round robin setup. One of the bands scheduled to play apparently went to jail, so our buddies in Golden Error got to play. And the other bands were Team Robespierre, Cerebral Ballzy, and She Rides. And somehow after that, we got out of town in time to make it to Houston to see Skeletonwitch yet again w/ Black Tusk, and Kylesa. So. My brains are fried. Just purchased the new Extra Golden cd.
Thanx to all of our friends in every band we saw like Black Skies, and Colossus, and everyone else. Extra Special thanx to Jeff Hammett and his family for putting us up. More and More And More soon.
alahoyus. So, I'm sure some of you have noticed that I went from like 2 updates a day to zilch pretty quickly. Well, its because we are back on tour. And its been fucking hectic/crazy/super busy. I'll be posting a shitton of pics asap. As for right now, what's been on my mind? Well, we played a killer show in St Augustine, Florida called Harvest of Hope. There were tons of bands, and it was only about 1000 times cooler than any single warped tour show we ever did. And most of the bands there we met @ Warped Tour. Got to hang with Strike Anywhere and our buddies in Against Me!. Saw our buds in Bouncing Souls, and got to watch Bad Brains. I wish I could've hung out for sunday. Couldve seen the GZA, and Kool Keith, and KRS-1, and Murs. But whatever, you can't do it all. I did ride the Scrambler w/ Bennie, and almost puked. It was rad. Ate a bunch of fair food. Read most of Kurt Vonnegut's son's novel, The Eden Express. His name is Mark Vonnegut and he was/is schizophrenic. It's a pretty hectic read. What else? Thanx to all our friends all over florida, as we were there for over a week in all the nooks and crannys. Anyway, like I said, pics coming soon. bird up.
-- Obama claims troops are out by 2010. which means at best, they start by 10, and it actually says that even the reserves are pulled by the end of 2011. i guess we'll need them here for the end of the world in 2012.
-- Coen bros make a commercial in an snl manner to bust big coals chops:
-- octopus causes worst news story presented by cnn ever. I cannot believe how bad this is. Its the reason that local news is always a source of entertainment. I feel like they just made this bad on purpose. Does anyone else get what im sayin here? On a lighter note, I ate octopus in Greece. My friend Mano kept calling it "octopussy". "Do you like the octopussy?", "ask you friend is she likes the octopussy."
--this is a great link to some british weird news show connected with the bbc. its called oddbox. and on this little 5 minute episode, you get an 82 year old metalhead, a game called cornish hurling where the whole town just beats the hell out of each other for a ball, battle of the oranges, which is sort of like it sounds, and all kinds of other weird rad newsbits. enjoy.
this is the biggest foray into marijuana legalization i've ever seen. Sure there's places just like california where you can smoke and its basically decriminalized... Denver, parts and parts of alaska come to mind... But there are many bills like this that haven't gotten nearly as much attention in the past few years, in weird places like North & South Dakota, and other farm states, that HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN that all you'd have to do to generate a shitload of revenue was to tax weed.
hello, and welcome to another addition of Awesome Band Alert. Today's band's are not new bands, but they are exciting and refreshing nonetheless. I feel that you guys who have not heard about them will be psyched to check them out. These are all bands from the triangle area of North Carolina which consists of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Let's get started. band#1- the first two bands that we'll discuss played a killer house party (which are very rare in these parts these days) in Raleigh this weekend. the first one ill talk about is Double Negative. (actually the first band that played was called Whatever Brains, but I missed them.) So, Double Negative are no bullshit hardcore band that kill it. Need more info? how about a video showing them jam? That should sum it up for you. Brian Walsby is the drummer and did the art for our Exit Strategy video. He has a new book (his fourth) coming out on Bifocal Media w/ yet another Melvins "official?" bootleg.
ok. band #2 is the Birds of Avalon. they are labelmates of ours and put on a hell of a show. We were all fans of the different bands that they are made up of (Cherry Valence, Dynamite Brothers, Olympus Mons, Pyramid, the Weather, etc.) and so a few years back, they just started blazing away. Ive gotten word that they have a new record in the can, and I cant wait to get my filthy paws on a copy. The new jams and Can cover that they played were awesome @ the party. This party by the way, was most certainly the perfect example of a how to do up a house party. You couldn't fit one more person in (even tho they tried). And there were super young lil dudes just rocking... some so young that they didn't even care about scoring beer, they were just there to party. That to me, is always a beautiful thing. It was getting so crazy that the floor was flexing, crackheads were being escorted out to the lawn, and i was starting to get a real "hey now!/old man" type vibe. Haha. It was hectic to say the least. I had beer and confetti (that Craig Tilly- their singer threw out) in my hair, and even the next day some in my bed.
alright, and finally- band #3- Caltrop. This is one of my favorite bands around right now. i absolutely love their new album and have been jamming the fucking demos from it since last year. Jason Lucian Thorr was a drummer in this band in the beginning and will still jam with them from time to time. Adam Nolton is one of my favorite guitar players in the country and I believe that Sam and him having been writing some amazing licks while this band has been going. Adam used to have this band called Pegasus while I was living in Chapel Hill about 5 years ago, and I used to love to go get stoned and listen to them jam. But now, this band is even better, what with Murat from Kerbloki, and other local bands on bass and vocals, and speaking of Sam, I think that with this band, his guitar playing has improved from other bands he's been in, and his goddamn vocals on this are unbelievable. I feel like this is a weird compliment, but I think the band sounds like Big Business if they wrote Earthless type jams w/ a Hendrix player on guitar and the dude from Soundgarden singing. In the best way possible. But they are even better than that, because hendrix didnt have a killer harmony man jamming guitar with him, and theyve got Murat on vox as well as John Crouch on drums. And that dude is every bit the drummer that Jason was, and is. Meaning- I hold them both high on my drummer scale. So yup. Come out to see them play with us this Sunday @ Tir Na Nog in Raleigh. Now, all you have to do is check out all these links and you'll become a super genius, like me.
it has come to my attention that somehow and someway, the nice lady who posted Valient Thorr as Funkadelic has come under fire last week for posting that video and another one that had some band covering Bryan Adams. And from what i heard, it was Bryan Adams peoples fault. But the video clearly says that its VT as Funkadelic. So I don't understand what rules were broken. Karen Mann, a longtime blogger, has had her youtube account pulled!! Now, I'm hearing this all secondhand, so I'll get the scoop and post an update. If its a matter of renaming it and posting it again, well, we'll just see what we can do. I was under the impression that there was footie of the whole shebang, not just the first few jams. Cause believe me, once we started getting down, it just kept getting better as it rolled along. I don't see what all the hub bub is in the first place. I'm sure someone will feel the need to tell me. But, c'mon?!?! What about all the tribute bands and cover groups the world over. This was a one time event for charity, not us fronting like we Appetite for Destruction or Baaad, or some other band who makes a ton of bread impersonating groups for a living. what a load of shit. george clinton, say it ain't so! more soon...
last time we were in san diego, i saw this in the office of the casbah on the back of the door with like 15 or so other "andre the giant has a posse" type bootlegs from a few years back. it made me laugh so hard, i spilled my drink all over the office, and had to go find someone to clean up the mess. (not that im too good to clean up my own mess, but c'mon, i'm handling business, and playing nice with the folks, i really didn't have time....). I hope you enjoy it nearly as much as i did.
we did this a while back, but i'm really psyched on it. If you dig it, go here, and register and "up" it. That way theyll keep playing it, and dudes will find out that we are badass. haha. it takes like two seconds. thanx fer yer support.
man, how come no one ever showed me this before! I can't believe with as much nerding out over both of them over the years as I've done, that I've never seen any of this footage before. Now, I HAVE heard of the movie (Human Highway) that they did, and i'm pretty sure the footage of "worried man" that I always see is from that, but I never saw this jam w/ DEVO and Neil Young playing "my my hey hey (into the black)." Its got Mark Motherbaugh singing as Boogie Boy. What a gem of a find. Anyone have a whole copy of this flick? Time to add it to the list. Check it out. Neil Young & Devo
alahoyus. Today is my thirtieth earth birthday. and with that, i have a new little thing i'm going to do whenever i see awesome bands. I don't know how many of you feel this way, but I see a million bands, and I used to get excited and impressed easily, but somewhere along the line, the quality turned into quantity of actual bands that are out there, and the output turned to shit. Im rarely blown away, and I thought, well, from now on, when I am, Ill tell the world about it. So, Ill tell you a little about them, and then you click on the links and check them out. Simple enough, right? Ok, here we go. Awesome Band #1 is called Children. I saw them the other day in the west side in Manhattan. I believe they are from nyc as well. I think we should take them out with us. Pretty intense ripping stuff. For fans of Early Man, Saviours, and other badass things. Looks like they are working on a new record. Awesome Band #2 is from the same town (Orebro) in Sweden that Witchcraft and Truckfighters and Winchester Widowmakers and about a 100 other awesome bands are from. They are called Dead Man, and they completely blew me away last night. Swedish prog/folk played now, that is every bit as ripping as any of the bands that you'd find on an Underground Psych comp. i bought both of their albums. One of which isn't available in the US. i believe their 2nd lp, Euphoria, is available in the states on Metro City (im pretty sure anyway, just check their myspace). The 3rd Awesome Band for this installment is a band from Iowa called Radio Moscow. I thought these little dudes were just there to see the show last night, and then after dead man ripped, they got up and started grabbing the instruments and commenced to just killing it. They were so young, and i was tripping out, b/c i thought somehow since I'd hit 30, that now everyone just seemed young and i was an old man... hahaha, but maybe that was the beers. These kids were pumping out a Blue Cheer meets Hendrix w/ a heavy dose of British blues. I had discounted them after hearing one single a while back, but obviously I heard the wrong track. These dudes are solid. Check these last two out and about right now. Do not miss them. alright. Party On.
alahoyus. here are a few other pics i thought you'd enjoy from nyc. the one with the clown was on the side of like a shiner's hospital ex-ambulance vehicle that clowns go see sick little kids in, I guess, but check out how sinister the clown looks. And what kind of hospital lets a evil clown named "BJ" come over? It just seemed like the dirtiest shit i'd ever seen. Its no wonder everyone is scared of clowns. There is no fucking way I'd want this clown coming over to cheer me up. The graffiti was from Bushwick in Brooklyn. "DICKCHICKEN" just made me laugh as i was about to get on the subway. it also snowed like a mother while i was there. beatuimous.
